introduction
From the problems that face the
astronauts up in the space is the psychological problems, so, in the
preparation for an expedition (even short or long), we must prepare our crew
mentally to face them.
Stress:
Being with a small group of people
in an enclosed space for a long period of time can result in depression and
interpersonal conflicts in a well-adjusted group. These problems, however
minor, can lead to a disaster in an experimental spacecraft or any other
environment. So, as the scientists and physicists are trying to find ways to
protect the astronaut from the cosmic radiations, many psychologists are funded
by NASA and other organizations to predict and deal with behavioral problems
that may arise.
We can think of the astronauts
abroad Apollo 13, these men faced one of the most stressful situations
experienced by any human being before, as they were hundreds of thousands of
kilometers from our planet, surrounding by the space, in a damaged ship and
losing oxygen, so if they are not mentally prepared for such situations, they
might have panicked. So, no doubt in that, their psychological characteristics
were one of the reasons for their success.
Isolation
The astronauts in the International
Space Station are 408 kilometers above the Earth, surrounding only by space.
The missions have very specific
durations, so, once you reached, there is no option to return until the mission
is over. This means that, once they get on board the ship, they are aware that
for several days, weeks, even in some cases, months, they will not have any
chance of seeing their loved ones or moving beyond the narrow corridors of a
metallic structure that will float without pause over the planet.
